Korean Open 2009 & International Governors Cup 2009
01.12.09
The following article was take from www.tkdscotland.com website and contains information about Caledonian players; Ewan Harrison, Thomas Anderson, Dilexsan Francis Alosious and Dale Rhodie. Ewan Harrison, Dale Rhodie, Dilexsan Francis Aloysious and Thomas Anderson attended Pung Saeng High School in the summer of 2009.
Thomas was funded by Caledonian University and Dilexsan was funded by Eddie Woods of Mind Safety Ltd. For more information about the funding they received click here.
Ewan overcame Hong in the first round with a strong display only to come short against a Korean University athlete in the second round.

In the same competition Scottish youngster Thomas Anderson became the first Scottish athlete to medal at the Korean Open with a hard earned bronze medal in the children's division, defeating Korea but falling to the eventual gold medal winner from Kazakhstan in the semi final.
A mere week later the Scottish Team athletes were back in action at the International Governors Cup.The full national teams of Great Britain, Croatia, Belgium, Iceland, Norway, South Africa and Thailand were joined by the Korean High School, University and Professional teams of the district. On this occasion Ewan Harrison lost to seasoned campaigner Bjron Thorliesfon of Iceland (British Open silver) a very valuable experience indeed.
The final day of the three day event saw a hard earned bronze for Dilexan Aloysious in the Junior -48 category with victory over Korea. Followed by a gold medal in the cadet -47 Kilos category for Thomas Anderson with 3 great victories over tough Korean opposition.

British International Open Results
21.09.09
The club had several players competing in the British International Open. Several players were representing Scotland. Peter Sutherland and Scott Simeon were representing Caledonian and played well in their matches. Peter lost his first match against a much taller English player but played well and adapted top the new rule changes. Scott was also in action after a several week lay off with a hamstring tear and played well against an experienced Swedish opponent.
The rest of the players were representing Scotland and the following details have been taken from the Taekwondo Scotland website.
"In -80 Dale Rhodie returned to competitive action after knee surgery in April. His successful rehab was complete with a strong performance against the Belgian National Team. The scores were tied at 2-2 at the end of a very tight match, with the referee awarding the Belgian the match on grounds of superiority at the end of the sudden death round. A credit worthy performance after such a long lay off and one that will provide confidence for the rest of the year.
Also going in the male welter category was Ewan Harrison, fresh from Juniors and fresh from 12 weeks in Korea (is it possible to be fresh after that?) he came through his first match 3 -1 against the Czech National Team. Only to fall short in the quarter- final 3-2 against the experienced Polish National team athlete in a bruising encounter.
In the Female -53 group Laura Sweeney showed great fitness and footwork to overcome French National Team Maeiva Coutant in match one. Coutant 2007 junior European Champion and 2008 Senior European Bronze medalist went down 3-1 to the young Scot with a headshot late in the 3rd round. Laura worked hard to overcome Turkey’s Sibel Yildirm, eventual silver medalist, in the next match but the Turkish athlete proved more effective overall in a 4-1 win.
In -62 Carla Summerhill scored an impressive 14-2 win in her opening match only to come up just short against Norway National Team. Starting well with a 4-0 lead Carla could not sustain her early scoring against the 2007 world bronze medalist. With the Scores tied 5-5 it went to sudden death, prolonged by video replays, the Norwegian just edged it in the end.
Nathan Brown produced a series of strong performances to come away with a hard earned silver medal. Overcoming Scorpion TKD by 12-4 in round one and Puma TKD 3-2 in the next Nathan advanced to the semis finals where he overcame the Belgian national Team fighter 1-0. On to the final where Nathan worked hard to defeat his older German opponent but couldn’t find the scoring shots required and so succumbed to a 4-1 defeat. An excellent effort and signs of good progress."

Congratulations to Carla Summerhill who has been selected to represent the UK at the World University Games. Carla is currently studying medicine at Edinburgh University. This year she was awarded a sports bursary from the university which has been extremely beneficial in her development.

It is currently hoped that Great Britain will have a delegation in excess of 150 athletes and officials at the event covering 11 sports, including Taekwondo, one of two guest sports at the Games.
This will be the fourth consecutive summer WUGs that a Taekwondo team has been part of the Great Britain delegation, in addition Great Britain teams have regularly attended the World University Taekwondo Championships which are also held on a biennial basis.

Hilton Foundations Raises £585 for Caledonian Taekwondo
13.04.09
Every years, the staff at Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor set out to raise funds for various local causes. This year despite the recession the hotel managed to raise over £1000.00 for local causes. This years recipients were Caledonian Taekwondo and Action for Children.

Each year Caledonian Taekwondo runs a sporting and cultural exchange programme with Pung Saeng High School, Seongnam South Korea. The programme commemorates the life of Lee Sung lee, a young Pung Saeng student who tragically died of cancer aged just 16. Each year we remember his life and times. We pay tribute to the martial art that meant so much to Lee Sung Lee and too so many worldwide. In 2002, prior to his passing, Lee Sung lee provided his home for 6 weeks to members of the Caledonian Team. The following year he was supposed to stay with members of Caledonian Taekwondo for 6 weeks, the programme is now an annual tribute.
The support provided by Hilton's Charitable Foundation will Caledonian Taekwondo Community to purchase;
- Some much needed sporting equipment
- A projector to help teach the principles of the sport to a wider audience
- Financial support for one Korean athlete during their six week stay this August
- Financial support for one Scottish student during their six week development programme in Korea
With the support of the Hilton we will hold a fund raising night on
20th August at the Grosvenor West End
At this night we will present exactly how helpful the Hilton's sponsorship has been during a fun night of appreciation and thanks to all the families and sponsors involved.

On day two Ewan and Laura were fighting and Ewan was first up. Ewan narrowly lost to the eventual silver medalist 1-0 and looked very comfortable throughout the match. Unfortunately it was not to be his day. Laura was next up and was beaten in her first match match.

WTF has concluded the ballots for major amendments of the competition rule. This ballot has been conducted by e-vote over the internet. An overwhelming majority of members voted for the change of the existing competition rules.
The major changes are:
- competition area will shrink to 8 x 8 m
- new point system: 1 point for body hits, 2 points for back kicks to the body, 3 points for head kick
- a video review for scoring will be available

- Kyonggos will be added to the opponent instead of being deducted
- installation of a video replay system
Recommendations for the changes have been discussed at the 'Regulations and Match Rules Reform Meeting' which has been held in December 2008 at Turkey. The new rules will come to effect in the upcoming 2009 World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships in June.

- The WTF Education Committee changed to WTF Education, Training and Development Committee.
- A Technical Committee for Poomsae will be created.

In the Female -53 group Laura Sweeney showed great fitness and footwork to overcome French National Team Maeiva Coutant in match one. Coutant 2007 junior European Champion and 2008 Senior European Bronze medalist went down 3-1 to the young Scot with a head shot late in the 3rd round.
On to the final where Nathan worked hard to defeat his older German opponent but couldn't’t find the scoring shots required and so succumbed to a 4-1 defeat. An excellent effort and signs of good progress."
